So ultimately no, whichever situation it was I don't think the Tyrell's killed Joffrey. That besides the fact that its just too obvious. Sansa (and us) are led to this conclusion by Littlefinger (a known liar) presenting all the clues Agatha Christie mystery style. That's not Martin's style and it makes me instantly dismiss the 'easy' solution.
If you remember, during the Purple Wedding, Littlefinger was the one who hired those little people to perform for the king. He also knew there was tension been Joffrey and Tyrion, and all he needed was for them to cause a scene, taking attention away from the Queen of Thorns.
Joffrey is not stabbed by a catspaw in a private moment, or killed in the frenzy of battle in a death like the one Cersei tried to deliver to her brother Tyrion. bHpw.
