Any adaptor will not work, you need one that has a specific rock band or guitar hero mode. I recently got a 20$ ps2 - ps3 regular adaptor to play with the same Red Octane Gibson ps2 controller to play RB3 my ps3, and it did not work. I had to buy a near 100$ adapter on Ebay made by TAC .
I use Guitar Hero controllers for Rock Band all the time-no adapter needed. Your Guitar Hero guitar controllers should work with Rock Band, as I do this all the time. You will require a software update for this to work. If your PS3 is connected to the Internet, you should be prompted for this the first time you play Rock Band.

It's been a year now that I've used the keyboard instead of a controller to play Guitar Hero 3. After a little while, I was tired of using a keyboard to play the game and decided to search online to find some wired controllers that I could use on PC. But sadly, you have to buy a used one from eBay/Amazon to be able to play properly.
02-06-2013, 01:06 AM. I managed to get the Guitar Hero games to detect the controller as guitar (controller port, not USB), but I haven't checked LilyPad. Try it, and if it behaves abnormal (not like a DualShock controller) then it's most likely working. Then you could use whatever guitar controller as LilyPad allows you to remap it.
I have a cheap chinese dual ps2 to usb controller and it seems to work with every controller I throw at it, so I assume it would work with a guitar hero controller. Might be worth spending $3.50 on one of those. r/ps3homebrew.
So no you can't use just the dual shock 2 controller to play anything on the game. They dropped that support of using the dual sock 2 controller for the guitar parts after Guitar Hero 3 came out, and they have no plans on putting that playability back in anytime soon.
But anyway when it comes to wii guitars you'll need either the wiimote and a Bluetooth adaptor for the pc for it to connect to. Then you will need a key binding script to take the inputs from the guitar to buttons on the keyboard. Example being green = A, red = S and so on.
